Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools

Cadernos Ibero-Americanos de Direito Sanitário (CIADS) recognizes that Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools may be useful in the drafting, revision, analysis, and communication of research, provided their use is responsible, ethical, and transparent. Any application of AI must be declared by the authors, critically reviewed by humans, and clearly described in the manuscripts. This policy applies to all contributions submitted to the journal, including original articles, reviews, and other scientific formats.

1. Definition

An AI tool is considered to be any software system capable of generating or assisting in the production, analysis, review, or synthesis of scientific content, including language models, text generation systems, and data analysis tools.

2. Permitted use

  • Grammatical, spelling, and stylistic revision of the text;
  • Formatting of bibliographic references;
  • Assistance in data analyses, provided that the methods employed are described with sufficient detail to ensure reproducibility;
  • Generation of abstracts or summaries, provided that all content is reviewed and validated by the authors.

3. Prohibited use

  • Submission of text generated entirely by AI without human supervision;
  • Fabrication, falsification, or manipulation of data;
  • Attribution of authorship to AI;
  • Omission of AI use in cases of significant content generation;
  • Automatic translations or paraphrases not reviewed by humans;
  • Modification of confidential information or sensitive data without authorization.

4. Responsibility and ethics

  • The author is fully responsible for the content, accuracy, and scientific integrity of the manuscript, including any AI-assisted parts;
  • CIADS is not responsible for errors, omissions, or biases resulting from the use of AI;
  • AI tools cannot be listed as authors, as they do not hold ethical or legal responsibility for the content;
  • AI use must comply with ethical principles of scientific research, academic integrity standards, and applicable legislation on copyright and data protection;
  • Editors may request clarification regarding AI use, assess its impact on scientific integrity, and use technological tools to assist in verifying AI-generated or AI-modified content, without replacing human evaluation;
  • Concealment or omission of AI use constitutes a serious ethical violation and may result in appropriate editorial actions, in accordance with the scientific integrity guidelines adopted by the journal.

5. Declaration of use

Authors must declare AI use on the title page, in the abstract, and in the methodology section or equivalent. The declaration must include:

  • Name of the tool;
  • Function performed (e.g., linguistic revision, data analysis, summarization);
  • Extent of use in the manuscript.

Example declaration in the manuscript:

This manuscript used the tool [tool name] for [function], with full review and validation by the authors, covering [extent of use in the manuscript].”
