Abstract
Objective: The article presents the results of a study on the subjective perception of diabetic patients within the male prison system of the Federal District and on the challenges faced in living with the disease in the context of the Penitentiary Complex of Papuda. Methods – The study used an exploratory-descriptive method, based on a qualitative approach and discourse analysis of the collective subject. Results: The main results were related to the low knowledge about the disease; DM individuals with DM for at least 5 years; and the lack of verification in the implementation of the objectives and guidelines of the National Policy for Comprehensive Health Care for Persons Deprived of Liberty Prison System (PNAISP), part of the Unified Health System (SUS). Conclusion - The prison system is not prepared to deal with the special needs of prisoners with diabetes mellitus.
