Abstract
The book Public Health Writings is a collection of texts and articles by Professor Dr Luiz Carlos Pelizari Romero, written throughout his career as a sanitarist, covering several topics in public health. There are seven chapters, which begin by telling the history of the Unified Health System, leading the reader to understand the political forces that dominated the debate on public health before the 1988 Constitution. The author discusses the importance and regulation of various health professions, including the community health agents. It makes a diagnosis of pharmaceutical care in Brazil and how this aspect of public health has evolved amid different public policies, bringing the most varied impacts. The controversial issue of drugs is unraveled, with an analysis of Brazilian legislation, the regulation of tobacco and alcohol, prevention strategies, and the relationship between injecting drugs and HIV. Texts on bioethics are presented: comparative legislation on transplants, legal abortion hypotheses, genetic counseling, and euthanasia. The last chapter brings his views on alternative medicine and its regulation.
